The ancient name of Furore was Terra Furoris because during the stormy nights the noise of the sea was actually very loud. Furore is a very small town situated in the homonymous fiord. It develops on the beach and along the slopes of Lattari Mountains (the town can't be seen from the main road of Amalfitana Coast).
In this town there are no squares or widenings. The two parts of the towns were linked by a very long staircase, built during the period of the Repubblica marinara. During the past the fiord was inhabited by fishermen, then it was abandoned but it has been recovered for some years.
The fiord of Furore is one of the most picturesque fiords of Italy and offers to visitors wonderful landscapes, perfectly merged with the beauty of Amalfi Coast . There are many gorges that cut the huge mountain that falls into the sea; the name of the most interesting is "schiato". This was the name of a stream that fed a paper-mill and a water mill. In this gorge there is an anglers' village (it is almost abandoned) and the sea penetrates under the bridge of the road offering exceptional colours.
The village is 300 m . above the sea level and can be reached through a path made also of steps. There are three interesting churches. The church dedicated to Saint Michael has three naves: the side ones are covered by cross vaults with round arch. There are four chapels linked to the main central nave through pointed arches. Light enters through monophores. The bell tower, in front of the main entrance, has monophores on each floor and a small dome covers the cylindrical cellar. The church dedicated to Saint James has three naves, too. The central nave has white marble columns and capitals having the shape of reversed cones. Arches are pointed. The nave is covered by a roof. Side naves, instead, are covered by cross vaults. The bell tower has monophores. The floors of the bell tower are separated by light frames and it is surmounted by a dome covered by majolica.
The church dedicated to Saint Elijah has only a nave sided by chapels. The entrance is at the ground floor of the bell tower and has a cross vault. The church was restructured in 1474 and contains a beautiful triptych by painter Angelo Antonelli, made in 1479. This painting portraits Our Lady with Saint Elijah and Saint Bartholomew.
